Taxi driver waiting for passengers during busy office hour at Chitpur Road, near Shobabazar. The Yellow Taxi is an icon of Kolkatas diverse public transport system. Though Taxis had already been introduced in the city before independence, the Yellow Taxi started gaining popularity in the 60s when the newly manufactured Hindustan Ambassador car model was converted to a Taxi.

Hindustan Motors factory was set up in 1948, and it started production of the Hindustan Ambassador car in the late 50s. It soon became the vehicle of choice for bureaucrats and politicians for travel. In 1962, the Calcutta Taxi Association took initiative to convert the Hindustan Ambassador to the iconic Yellow Taxi.
